CUBO UNIPOL

AMYGDALA was first commissioned on the occasion of the exhibition “FLUX-US” at CUBO Bologna in 2016. On this occasion, the curatorial path hosted AMYGDALA for 3 months, during which the work continuously collected and analysed tweets and translated them into a visual and auditory experience.

Our collaboration with Unipol began in 2012, when the planning and building of CUBO, (Centro Unipol Bologna) was commissioned from FUSE*ARCHITECTURE, a spinoff of the studio arising from collaboration between fuse* and the architect Fabrizio Gruppini. CUBO has since been a reference point in the local art scene, organising exhibitions and cultural activities for the public.

The exhibition, named “FLUX-US”, consisted of an artistic journey spanning all exhibition spaces of CUBO and including works by Mary Bauermeister, Francesca Pasquali and fuse*. The show was conceived as an uninterrupted flow of situations, perceptions, and multiple experimental sensory experiences in which the visitor is invited to interact and participate. On this particular occasion, AMYGDALA has been commissioned to fuse* to be shown on the 41 CUBO Mediagarden columns and the 12 video walls of the Mediateca.

The light installation of AMYGDALA has been created for the 41 LED bars distributed throughout the two gardens of CUBO. Each column is made up of a matrix of 3,071 high luminosity RGB LEDs, for a total of 125,952 LEDs, each controlled from the server room through 2.75km of optic fibre. The columns were designed to work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. An internal cooling system allows a constant temperature to be kept, and a flow of air is blown onto the front glass panel to avoid misting.

In a particular section of the garden between the two wings of CUBO buildings, the columns are placed in a circular formation. This area houses a 360° audio system that envelops the spectators within the heart of the installation.
